In parallel with interest in expanding the performance possibilities of brass instruments, Thom also writes many of his own original compositions for brass. These works vary greatly but most involve the use of technology and computer based compositional techniques. They incorporate sampled and synthesized sounds as well as live input from microphones/silent brass. The ability to easily record and loop live sounds from instruments makes it easy for traditional brass sounds to be incorporated into electronic music, and the addition of effects to these live sounds can change the timbre, texture and tone of brass almost limitlessly.
Thom also composes music that accompanies new media such as web sites, video games and is actively creating soundtracks for film and television. He also produces dance music and as well as remixing existing tracks. These areas, which started off as an offshoot to Thom's brass works, are quickly overtaking as a main focus and will expand into a full time enterprise over the next few years.
